Off the western coast of Scotland lies the Isle of Mull, the home of Tobermory distillery, makers of Ledaig peated spirit. This Ledaig single malt was distilled in 2010 and matured in a refill hogshead for just over 11 years before being transferred to a first fill Chateau Talbot red wine barrique in 2023.
“Scotch Opening” is the first limited edition release in the Chess series. “Scotch Opening” or “Scotch Game” was first mentioned by Ercole del Rio, in 1750 in Sopra il giuoco degli Scacchi, Osservazioni pratiche d’anonimo Autore Modenese (“On the game of Chess, practical Observations by an anonymous Modenese Author”). The opening received its name from a correspondence match in 1824 between Edinburgh and London. While popular in the 19th century, it waned in its usage until 20th century grandmasters Garry Kasparov and Jan Timman helped to re-popularise the opening as a surprise tactic. The opening begins with the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4.
This label is designed by Toronto-based artist Alexander Perkins. Part of the joy of the process with Alex has been watching his drawings evolve. When we saw the initial sketches for the Scotch Opening label, we knew that one release with Alex would not be enough.
